Sharon Arnold MBIPDT: Founder & Head Behaviourist

Over 28 years ago, I decided to turn my passion for dogs and training into something more and founded FromeK9. What began as a hobby alongside everyday life has continued to grow and evolve into the busy training and behaviour centre it is today.

As Founder and Head Behaviourist at FromeK9, I bring nearly three decades of professional experience working with dogs and their owners. For me, dog training has never simply been a job — it is a passion, a way of life and something that continues to fascinate me. I get enormous satisfaction from helping owners better understand their dogs, overcome challenges and build a relationship that allows both dog and owner to enjoy life together.

More about Sharon

Dogs have always played a huge part in my life. I currently share my home with German and Dutch Shepherds, although over the years I have also owned terriers and German Pointers.

German Shepherds are particularly special to me. I have owned, bred, trained and competed with the breed for many years and have had the privilege of representing the breed on the German Shepherd Dog stand at both Crufts and Discover Dogs on behalf of the Royal Kennel Club.

My own training has taken me across a huge variety of disciplines, including Competitive Obedience, Working Trials, Agility, Canicross, Breed Showing, Water Rescue, Scentwork and Protection Sports. I have competed successfully across a number of these disciplines, including competing at European level in Canicross.

Competitive Obedience remains a particular passion, and I continue to compete with my own dogs at a high level. I am also a qualified Competitive Obedience Judge, giving me the opportunity to be involved in the sport from both sides of the ring. I believe continuing to train, compete, judge and challenge myself is incredibly important — there is always more to learn, regardless of how many years you have been working with dogs.

Alongside competing, I have been actively involved in organising dog training events and have served on various committees within the dog world. I have also worked with the Canine Film Academy, training and handling dogs for professional photoshoots.

My practical experience is supported by continued professional study. I have studied with COAPE and am a full member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, a Master Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers, and a member of the Canine & Feline Behaviour Association.

However, qualifications are only one part of becoming a good trainer or behaviourist. I place enormous value on hands-on experience, continuing education and, most importantly, learning from the thousands of dogs and owners I have worked with over the years. I regularly attend courses, seminars and training events, continually developing my knowledge and adding techniques that I believe will genuinely benefit the dogs and people I work with.

My approach to training
I don't believe in trying to fit every dog into the same training system.
I train the dog in front of me.

Breed, genetics, temperament, previous experiences, environment and the individual owner all influence behaviour. Understanding what a dog has been bred to do — and working with those genetics rather than constantly fighting against them — is an important part of my approach.

My training is practical, sensible and realistic. I look at the whole picture, establish clear communication between dog and owner and develop training that can actually be incorporated into everyday life.

When working with behavioural problems, my aim isn't simply to suppress what we can see on the surface. I want to understand why the behaviour is happening, give the dog greater clarity and confidence, and give the owner the skills to manage and change it.

Ultimately, I want to create a relationship where your dog understands what is expected of them, enjoys working with you and responds because they want to — not simply because they have to.

After nearly three decades, I am still just as passionate about dogs, behaviour and training as when FromeK9 first began — and I still believe every dog that walks through our doors has something new to teach us.

Cheryl Blake MBIPDT: Dog Training Instructor and Behaviourist

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life. From a very young age, I grew up surrounded by a pack of dogs of all shapes, sizes and personalities, including terriers, spaniels, rescue dogs and an Afghan Hound. Today, my own pack consists of two Dutch Shepherds, a Belgian Malinois, a German Shepherd and a Labrador.

I have been working with and training dogs for over 30 years, gaining experience across an extensive range of disciplines. These include competitive obedience, agility, ringcraft, scentwork and detection, water rescue, canicross, gundog foundations, flyball and ringsport, with experience at both European and international competition level.

I have also been teaching for more than 20 years, initially alongside my career as a childcare professional. Combining this background with raising my own family in a busy multi-dog household has given me a particularly strong understanding of working with junior handlers and supporting families who are introducing a dog into the home or experiencing challenges with their existing dog.

More about Cheryl

For the past 14 years, I have been a full-time member of the FromeK9 team, teaching everything from pet dog obedience and life skills to agility, focus and engagement, hoopers and scentwork. I also deliver a wide variety of specialist workshops and work extensively with dogs and their owners through behavioural consultations and training programmes.

My experience extends well beyond pet dog training. I have trained, bred and raised numerous dogs for licensing and operational roles with HM Prison Service and UK police forces, including both general-purpose and detection dogs. I have also been involved in the foundation environmental and tracking work of an anti-poaching dog and had the privilege of travelling to Africa to train alongside the team and see the dog working on deployment.

My dogs have worked on film shoots, demonstrated canicross and competed across a variety of disciplines. I have also run a flyball team at Crufts and continue to enjoy competing and training with my own dogs. Alongside this, I am a Detection Dog Trials judge and enjoy stewarding at competitive obedience shows.

I am a full member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers (BIPDT) and the Guild of Dog Trainers, hold a Level 3 Diploma in Animal Care and Conservation, and work under the CFBA. Combined with a lifetime of hands-on experience with dogs of many different breeds, temperaments and working backgrounds, this gives me a broad range of knowledge to draw upon when helping each individual dog and family.

Above all, my passion is building confidence in both dogs and their handlers. I love inspiring people to try something new, understand their dog better and discover what they can achieve together. Whether the goal is simply enjoying a relaxed walk, heading off on adventures, tackling behavioural challenges or stepping into the competition ring, I want people to enjoy a great life with their dog and, most importantly, have fun with their best friend.

Tash Moss: Instructor at FromeK9

Tash joined the FromeK9 team in 2022 and has continued to develop her experience and knowledge within the dog training world, working alongside our team of experienced trainers and behaviourists.

With over five years’ experience in dog training, Tash is a proud member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers and a Professional Dog Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers. She has also completed a number of diplomas through the Centre of Excellence, including Dog Training, Canine Behaviour Training, and Canine Anatomy & Physiology.

Tash’s love of dogs began in childhood, having always grown up surrounded by family dogs. However, her real passion for training and dog sports began in 2019 when she welcomed her first German Shepherd, Oak, into her life.

Since then, Tash has become increasingly involved in a wide variety of dog sports and training disciplines. She has competed successfully at agility shows, achieving a number of wins, and has also competed in Detection Dog Trials, including achieving 1st place in a Championship Trial with Oak.

Tash also competes in Royal Kennel Club Competitive Obedience and was incredibly proud to qualify and compete at Crufts with her two-year-old German Shepherd, Onyx, achieving an impressive 2nd place.

More about Tash

Her experience extends into a number of other specialist areas, including water rescue training and GRC (Game, Relationship & Control). Working across different disciplines has given Tash a broad understanding of training styles, working dogs and, importantly, the individual needs and motivations of each dog.

Tash firmly believes that learning never stops. She regularly attends courses, workshops and further training to continue developing her skills and expanding her knowledge, ensuring that the training and support she provides continues to evolve.

Dogs are a huge part of Tash’s life both professionally and personally. When she isn’t teaching at FromeK9, you’ll usually find her training, competing, attending dog-related events or simply enjoying the outdoors with her own dogs.

Tash’s goal is to continue developing as a trainer while sharing her enthusiasm for dog training with others. She particularly enjoys helping owners understand their dogs, discover what motivates them and build positive, trusting and rewarding relationships through training.

Dion Burke: Dog Trainer, Decoy, Working Dog Development

I have almost 15 years of professional, hands-on experience working with dogs, beginning at a large boarding and training kennels with capacity for over 100 dogs. Since then, I have helped raise, train and develop dogs for a wide range of roles, from family companions and competitive sport dogs through to security, police and prison work.

My main focus is practical dog training and development — understanding what motivates a dog, building clear communication and giving owners the skills to channel their dog's natural traits effectively.

I have personally trained six dogs from puppyhood through to becoming operational police or prison dogs in the UK, as well as helping to develop, assess and test puppies from more than 20 litters, matching individual dogs to suitable pet, sport or working homes.

Working with puppies sparked a strong interest in genetics, temperament and drive, particularly how inherited traits influence the way a dog learns and works. The same characteristics that can make an exceptional working dog can also present significant training challenges in everyday life if they aren't properly understood, developed and channelled.

More about Dion

Over the years I have gained extensive experience with a huge variety of breeds, with a particular affinity for larger, powerful dogs, guarding breeds and Molossoid types. Understanding the strength, confidence, genetics and natural instincts behind these dogs is an area I particularly enjoy, helping owners establish clearer communication, engagement and control.

Decoy and protection work has also been a major part of my development as a trainer. I have decoyed a wide variety of sport and operational working dogs in the UK, as well as dogs preparing for deployment into police and military roles in America and anti-poaching dogs working in Africa. This has given me valuable experience with dogs bred, selected and trained for very different real-world environments.

My experience with working dogs has taught me a huge amount about food, toy, prey/chase and fight drives, how genetics influence those drives and, most importantly, how to develop, channel and control them. I use many of these same training principles when working with everyday owners on issues such as reactivity, chasing, over-arousal, poor engagement and lack of focus.

With my own dogs, I have trained and competed across multiple sports, achieving PDC, Global Ring 1, Good Citizen Gold and UKTDA titles. I have trained at high-level protection sport clubs throughout the UK and Europe and completed further training in areas including decoy work, play and drive development and tracking, including training with the Norwegian Police.

A particular highlight was competing at the NVBK Global Ring World Championships in Germany with my dog Memphis.

I currently have five dogs: two active competition and demonstration dogs, two retired dogs enjoying life at home, and a young puppy I am developing with the aim of progressing into police work.

My approach is centred around training the dog in front of me. By understanding its genetics, motivation, natural drives and individual character, I can build stronger engagement, clearer communication and greater control, helping owners get the very best from their dog.

Tash Moss: FromeK9 Dog Daycare Trainer and Dog Training Assistant

Tash joined the team at FromeK9 in 2021, having previously attended our training classes with her German Shepherd Oakley.

Tash is currently studying canine behaviour and dog training with the Centre of Excellence. Along with this, “any free time I have is spent at FromeK9 learning and getting hands-on experience with Sharon and Cheryl to better develop my skill set.”

Some More Kind Words From Our Clients

  • “Picture the scene. Older bitch, nearly 13, bomb proof, gentle, never barked, pulled or misbehaved. We were lucky. Enter new family member (same breed). 7.5 months, no training, very reactive to movement and not properly house-trained. Quite a shock to the system, youngest animal we've ever owned. Asked round the local area about puppy classes, but told he was too old. Help .....

Then found FK9, who very kindly allowed us to join. They taught me how to teach not test Mambo. In the 20 months since then our old girl has died at 14 1/2. With the youngster we have achieved both KCGC puppy and Bronze certificates and are working towards Silver and Gold. He excels at scentwork, in fact his nickname is Sherlock. We have learnt so much and FK9 has been my lifesaver.

We've attended: Saturday workshops, Hide and Seek an absolute favourite. Online courses during the first lockdown. 121s with Cheryl. Scentwork and Obedience classes.

We've met a great group of like-minded dog owners/handlers who support and cheer each other on. Thank you all.”

  • “I can’t recommend FromeK9, highly enough. Barney (a show cocker spaniel) and I started our adventure with K9 when Barney was about 12weeks, he’s now 3. We started off in the puppy class learning the basics, then on to adult obedience training, all of which has given us a solid foundation of commands.

We moved into agility which was something I had always wanted to do with a dog. It was great fun, I didn’t want to take it to competition level, which you could, but wanted to have a go for fun, I’ve met some lovely people who are now good friends. Barney it turned out was far better at agility than his owner!

We have now moved onto scent class which has been another enlightening experience. We have taken part in Saturday workshops, gun-dog training, and had the odd 1:1 class, when I wanted to know how to check a certain behaviour, invaluable.

K9 has very experienced and knowledgeable trainers, that are approachable and helpful. I can’t recommend them highly enough. I now have a level headed, sociable, obedient cocker spaniel, thank you.”

  • “I came to Frome K9 initially with my puppy and found the information, training and guidance so valuable. I was able to build a good solid foundation with my young pup. Due to personal circumstances, I stopped training and my wonderful pup turned to an adolescent and we 'lost our way'. We had an issue we were very concerned with and booked a behaviour 121 with Sharon and were immediately put at ease and in fact our understanding of what was happening was very far from what we thought.

Sharon clearly had an extensive knowledge of dog behaviour and helped us understand exactly what was happening, she also recognised some fantastic qualities in Rex and suggested we try a particular workshop knowing he would love it (and oh boy does he!). From then I haven't looked back, we started attending obedience classes with Cheryl and threw ourselves into the weekend workshops whenever we could - bite night, hide and seek, water rescue and recall. We have also attended many 121s throughout lockdown.

I love the relationship I am continuing to build with my boy, my confidence is building and we (me and my dog) are understanding each other more and more. On top of all that we have so much fun with it! I couldn't recommend FK9 enough.”
