Sharon Arnold MBIPDT: Director and Head Dog Training Instructor and Behaviourist

Over 25 years ago I decided to follow my passion to train dogs and set up Frome K9. Since then, my ‘hobby’ business has continued to grow and expand, enabling me to share my knowledge with more people.

I am the head behaviourist at Frome K9, with vast experience of training and behavioural work under my belt. For me, training dogs is more than just a job, it is my passion and way of life and I get immense pleasure from helping dogs live their best life with their owner.

More about Sharon

When I am not at work you will find me training my own dogs, I currently share my life with German and Dutch Shepherds but have previously owned terriers and German Pointers. German Shepherds are particularly special to me, having owned, bred and competed with them for many years. I also had the privilege on a number of occasions to represent the breed on the GSD stand at both Crufts and Discover Dogs on behalf of the Kennel Club.

Over the years I have trained in a wide variety of dog sports and activities including Obedience, Working Trials, Agility, CaniCross, Breed showing, Water Rescue, Scentwork and Protection sports, I have competed at a high level in many sports including European level at CaniCross. In addition to training in these sports I have taken an active role in organising many events, and have served time on various committees. I have worked with the ‘Canine Film Academy’, training and handling dogs for photoshoots.

As well as hands on experience I have also studied with COAPE. I am a full member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, a Master Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers and a member of The Canine & Feline Behaviour Association. I regularly attend courses to remain up to date with methods and take what I find useful to add to my techniques. The combination of experience and technical knowledge allows me to consider all aspects effecting behaviour and select the most appropriate method for you and your dog.

I take a sensible and realistic approach when working with behavioural problems, helping to establish clear communication so training is successful and enjoyable for all. I won't waste your time in ineffectual activity or training.

I look at training the dog in front of us, I understand about working with the genetics in all breeds, and will tweak my work to suit both you and your chosen breed of dog, creating a relationship where your dog responds to you because they want to.

Cheryl Blake MBIPDT: Dog Training Instructor and Behaviourist

Cheryl has been teaching dogs for over 15 years, the last 7 of them we have had the privilege of Cheryl being a full time Instructor at FromeK9.

Cheryl joined us to share her lifetime passion and knowledge of living, working, competing and owning many different breeds of dogs.

Cheryl is a full member of the BIPDT (Bristish Institute of Professional Dog Trainers), NASDU and a level 2 security dog handler, having trained and developed dogs for licencing with the British Transport Police and HMP.

More about Cheryl

Cheryl continues to educate herself by attending various courses, and seminars to expand her knowledge and development. Aside from the everyday running of a busy dog and human household, Cheryl has competed in the UK and Europe in Globalring including British World championships being the first female to qualify in the UK, Flyball British divisional winner competing in European championships, leading a team at Crufts Flyball; if that wasn't enough, further accolades include the Arden Grange Agility finals, a qualification in UK tracking, and competing in KC competitive obedience.

Cheryl also brings her previous children teaching skills to the table through her own golden retrievers being handled by junior handlers in CaniCross at Crufts.

“My passion in working dogs started as a very young junior handler in the show ring with many breeds including the old English sheepdog and Tibetian spaniels. Growing up with German shepherds drew me into obedience and agility. Having also worked with packs of hounds and gundogs. Always owning a pack of dogs myself predominately retrievers German, Dutch and Belgian shepherds I have also owned a terrier and fostered a Staffordshire bull terrier for rehoming and spaniels for foundation gundog.”

Some More Kind Words From Our Clients

  • “Picture the scene. Older bitch, nearly 13, bomb proof, gentle, never barked, pulled or misbehaved. We were lucky. Enter new family member (same breed). 7.5 months, no training, very reactive to movement and not properly house-trained. Quite a shock to the system, youngest animal we've ever owned. Asked round the local area about puppy classes, but told he was too old. Help .....

Then found FK9, who very kindly allowed us to join. They taught me how to teach not test Mambo. In the 20 months since then our old girl has died at 14 1/2. With the youngster we have achieved both KCGC puppy and Bronze certificates and are working towards Silver and Gold. He excels at scentwork, in fact his nickname is Sherlock. We have learnt so much and FK9 has been my lifesaver.

We've attended: Saturday workshops, Hide and Seek an absolute favourite. Online courses during the first lockdown. 121s with Cheryl. Scentwork and Obedience classes.

We've met a great group of like-minded dog owners/handlers who support and cheer each other on. Thank you all.”

  • “I can’t recommend FromeK9, highly enough. Barney (a show cocker spaniel) and I started our adventure with K9 when Barney was about 12weeks, he’s now 3. We started off in the puppy class learning the basics, then on to adult obedience training, all of which has given us a solid foundation of commands.

We moved into agility which was something I had always wanted to do with a dog. It was great fun, I didn’t want to take it to competition level, which you could, but wanted to have a go for fun, I’ve met some lovely people who are now good friends. Barney it turned out was far better at agility than his owner!

We have now moved onto scent class which has been another enlightening experience. We have taken part in Saturday workshops, gun-dog training, and had the odd 1:1 class, when I wanted to know how to check a certain behaviour, invaluable.

K9 has very experienced and knowledgeable trainers, that are approachable and helpful. I can’t recommend them highly enough. I now have a level headed, sociable, obedient cocker spaniel, thank you.”

  • “I came to Frome K9 initially with my puppy and found the information, training and guidance so valuable. I was able to build a good solid foundation with my young pup. Due to personal circumstances, I stopped training and my wonderful pup turned to an adolescent and we 'lost our way'. We had an issue we were very concerned with and booked a behaviour 121 with Sharon and were immediately put at ease and in fact our understanding of what was happening was very far from what we thought.

Sharon clearly had an extensive knowledge of dog behaviour and helped us understand exactly what was happening, she also recognised some fantastic qualities in Rex and suggested we try a particular workshop knowing he would love it (and oh boy does he!). From then I haven't looked back, we started attending obedience classes with Cheryl and threw ourselves into the weekend workshops whenever we could - bite night, hide and seek, water rescue and recall. We have also attended many 121s throughout lockdown.

I love the relationship I am continuing to build with my boy, my confidence is building and we (me and my dog) are understanding each other more and more. On top of all that we have so much fun with it! I couldn't recommend FK9 enough.”
